4/21/2024 0 Comments Rough draft 5th grade examplesWhen the rubric was posted, it was never read by my students or if it was read, it wasn’t until the point in the semester in which the paper was nearly due. I soon stopped that practice because I felt I was enabling students to avoid the responsibility of actually reading the rubric themselves. This simply doesn’t happen.Įarlier in my teaching career, I would read over every word and every line of the assignment to make sure that students had indirectly read it. When a major paper assignment is posted, my expectations would be that the student immediately looks at the assignment and its connected rubric and begins the assignment. I decided not to provide any justification but instead simply directed her to the various rubrics that I had given everyone. While I was writing my response email, I considered how much I would need to justify this lack of feedback on the rough draft. I don’t give feedback on rough drafts unless a student specifically asks. I told her that she couldn’t find it because I didn’t give any. Today I received an email from another student who said she was looking for feedback I had given her on her rough draft. She asked me if I was going to give any feedback on the Rough Draft and I said “no.” I could see the look of consternation on her face and while I should have offered to look at her paper, at the time I was talking with multiple individuals and simply didn’t think to make the offer. I talked to her a little bit and ask her how she was feeling, and she told me she was feeling overwhelmed. From what I heard, it was her second time visiting there for just the first paper. Last week, I ran into one of my students at the Writing Center.
